Niger State House of Assembly Seeks Ban on "Marker’s Day"/Sign-Out Celebrations in Schools
The Niger State House of Assembly has urged the State Government to place an immediate ban on the celebration of "Marker’s Day" and "Sign-Out" ceremonies in all public and private secondary and tertiary institutions across the state.
The call was made during the House plenary held on Wednesday, August 6, following a motion moved by the Member representing Tafa Constituency, Hon. Muhammad Sani Idris. He expressed deep concern over what he described as the increasingly "unruly and immoral" conduct associated with such celebrations.
According to Hon. Idris, the events once meant to be joyful farewells for graduating students have turned into public displays of misconduct, often overshadowing the primary goal of academic excellence and intellectual development. He noted that students now dedicate significant time and energy preparing for these celebrations, rather than focusing on academic performance and personal growth.
“The original intent of these events has been lost,” Hon. Idris stated. “What we are witnessing today are scenes of rowdy gatherings, moral decadence, and rising cases of student misconduct that threaten the integrity of our education system.”
The motion received broad support from fellow lawmakers. Hon. Muhammad Haruna, representing Bida South Constituency, described the celebrations as having degenerated into "a bazaar of gangsterism and social disorder." He stressed the urgent need to restore discipline and moral responsibility within schools.
Hon. Murtala Badaru of Suleja Constituency also supported the motion, citing increasing public concern and the need for swift legislative and executive intervention.
In her ruling, Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Afiniki Dauda who presided over the session assured members of the Assembly that she would personally engage the Executive Governor of Niger State and the State Ministry of Education
