In a powerful gesture of empathy and solidarity, the First Lady of Niger State, Her Excellency Hajiya Fatima Mohammed Bago, has donated the sum of Fifty Million Naira (₦50,000,000.00) and delivered critical relief materials to victims of the recent devastating floods in Mokwa Local Government Area.
The floods, which claimed lives and destroyed properties worth millions of naira, left many communities in mourning and distress. In response, Her Excellency personally led a high-powered delegation to the affected areas, providing hope, humanitarian support, and a strong message of unity from the State Government.
According to a press statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Wife of the Governor, Hadiza Abdullahi Maikano, the First Lady conveyed the government’s heartfelt condolences and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding citizens, particularly in times of crisis.
Joining her were the Deputy Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Hon. Afiniki Eunice Dauda; Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman; members of the State Executive Council, and other dignitaries and well-meaning Nigerlites.
Addressing the crowd, Hajiya Fatima Bago expressed sorrow over the scale of the destruction and assured victims of both immediate aid and long-term interventions aimed at flood prevention and disaster resilience.
“Our hearts are with the families who lost loved ones and livelihoods. I therefore call on all stakeholders to come together at this trying time to support the people of Mokwa,” she said.
The relief items distributed included food supplies, household essentials, and medical provisions, as well as essential drugs and medications to address urgent health needs.The First Lady emphasized that this was only the beginning of a comprehensive recovery initiative.
In addition to her personal donation, the Office of the First Lady facilitated further contributions from partners: Fidelity Bank and the ABBASID Foundation donated numerous bags of food items, while Kiara Rice Company donated 1,000 bags of 25kg rice. The Forum of Commissioners also donated a total of Six Million Naira (₦6,000,000.00), while the Ministry for Primary Healthcare contributed drugs.
Hajiya Fatima Bago commended the swift actions of emergency responders, traditional rulers, local authorities, and volunteers who were instrumental in the evacuation and resettlement of displaced persons. She urged the relief distribution committee to maintain transparency and fairness in reaching all victims.
Beneficiaries of the intervention expressed deep gratitude to the First Lady and the Bago-led administration, describing the visit as a source of renewed hope and comfort in a time of despair.
