[Mx Gossip] 21 Injured in Road Crash on Minna-Bida Road

BIDA: 21 persons sustained various degrees of injuries after two vehicles crashed on the Minna-Bida Road, in Niger State.

The crash occurred along Sabon Gida village in Bida local government area on Sunday.

The Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) Sector Commander, Mr Kumar Tsukwam disclosed this to journalists in Minna .

The FRSC Commander said that the crash affected a Toyota Bus with registration number NSR 540 ZG and an unregistered Range Rover.

Tsukwam said that one of the tires of the Toyota bus had pulled off, leading it to crash into the oncoming Range Rove

He further said that 14 of the injured persons were taken to Federal Medical Centre Bida while the remaining seven were evacuated to Umaru Sanda General Hospital, Bida for treatment

Tsukwam thereby advised motorists to be vigilant and obey all traffic rules to avoid accidents.

The Leprosy Mission Provides Prosthetic Limbs to People With Disability



MINNA: 28 people with disabilities have received prosthetic limbs, wheelchairs and crutches from The Leprosy Mission (TLM) Nigeria in Niger state to help them regain mobility. 

The Head of Programmes and Operations, TLM Nigeria, Pius Ogbu Sunday said that the provision of the limbs is to assist the beneficiaries to regain mobility and self-sufficiency.

Speaking during the Mission’s disability outreach, Sunday explained that the beneficiaries include people who are affected by leprosy and those with other disabilities as a result of accidents and diabetes.

“Although TLM addresses the concerns of people affected by leprosy but in the last 10 years, we have decided to develop our strategy to reach out to both people affected by leprosy and people with other forms of disabilities that may have been caused by either accident or diabetics.

“The provision of these assistive technologies for the current beneficiaries is a result of our collaboration with TLM Australia who graciously was able to raise funds for us to provide these limbs to the people who need them. “

The Head of Programmes explained that the Mission expensed N7 million for the provision of the limbs as well as catering for the transportation, feeding and testing of the beneficiaries adding that the assistive technology includes above-the-knee and below-the-knee prosthetic limbs. 

The Niger state Commissioner of Health, Dr Muhammad Makunsidi who was represented by the Director of Public Health, Dr Ibrahim Idris applauded The Leprosy Mission for the gesture saying that it would enable the beneficiaries to move about freely.

He assured the organization of the government support in providing a conducive environment for them to operate in.

The representative of the Niger state Chapter of the Christain Association of Nigeria (CAN), Apostle Solomon Favour noted that the beneficiaries were very excited that they immediately wore the limbs when they were given saying that it has given them a new lease of life.

He said that they would no longer be dependent on their crutches or relatives as they would be independent and can move about freely.

Favour then urged the beneficiaries not to be depressed about their state saying that they should always be encouraged as there is hope for them.

One of the beneficiaries, Isah Usman who said he had an accident in February this year said life had not been easy for him as his two limbs were cut off.

He said that the prosthetic limbs would help him move about without depending on anybody as he appreciated The Leprosy Mission Nigeria and Australia for making him walk again.

Niger NMA Threatens Strike Over Abduction of Health Workers


MINNA: The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) in Niger State has given the State Government seven days ultimatum to ensure the safe release of healthcare workers and their families abducted two weeks ago in Gulu General Hospital in Lapai local government area.

The NMA said that it will embark on an industrial action if the victims are not rescued unharmed.

The NMA, in a statement signed by the State Chairman, Dr Yussuf Mohammed, accused the Niger State Government of not showing genuine commitment to ensuring the release of the abducted persons.

“We want the State Government to immediately coordinate its activities by ensuring that our Member and other medical staff abducted are freed unconditionally and save their families the trauma.”

The NMA in the statement also said that healthcare workers are finding it difficult to operate, especially in areas affected by insecurity due to the fear of attacks.

“Let’s sound it loud and clear that if security cover is not provided to health care facilities and we have a repeat of what happened at Gulu General Hospital, we will immediately down tools,” Mohammed said.

Giranhypehouse had reported that two people were confirmed dead and over 20 others including the Head of Clinical Services abducted by bandits who invaded the Abdulsalam Abubakar General Hospital in Gulu, Lapai local government area of Niger state.

While the Police reported that eight were abducted, the Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello states that the number of persons abducted was unspecified.

“Those kidnapped include the head of operations and his wife, the Head of clinical services, Dr John, Head of hematology Usman Zabbo, his wife and two daughters of the Head of Nursing, the Head of Medical Laboratory, the wife and daughter of the Chief Pharmacist and other relatives of patients”, correspondence in the area had stated.
